Hawaii's #1 snorkel site is the marine sanctuary at Kealakekua Bay. The name "Kealakekua" means "Pathway to God" and the Mana (spiritual power or energy) can be felt here by all. It is truly a wonder of nature and by far one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the state. The large bay is so situated so as to ensure calm (lake-like) waters year round.
The bay is also a historical area, having been the dramatic backdrop for the great explorer, Capt. James Cook, as his place of discovery of the Big Island and a short time later, on February 14, 1779, met his fate on this shore. Your Dolphin Discoveries captain will tell you the whole story as you watch it come alive at the very spot this history was made.

The coral gardens at the Place of Refuge are also exquisite and home to the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle ("Honu"). For a "Ho-Nu Experience", swim eye to eye with these beautiful sea creatures as they come into the bay to feed and rest.
There are also numerous species of fish, eels and coral reefs that are protected so that generations may enjoy this magical place for years to come.
